Pro-Russian protest erupts in Moldova after elections

Police intervened as clashes broke out between pro-Russian and pro-European demonstrators in Chisinau following parliamentary elections.

Violent altercations during protests

A pro-Russian protest and counter-protest occurred in Chisinau on Monday, September 29, following Moldova’s parliamentary elections. The unrest began when a protester shouted “Glory to Ukraine” and was pushed, leading to a scuffle. Police intervened, removing the injured man. According to reporter Marcin Orłowski, hundreds of pro-Russian supporters gathered near the parliament, while a smaller pro-European group stood nearby. The demonstrations ended with heated exchanges.

Police stated that participants were allegedly promised money to attend. In a statement, they emphasized respect for free expression but urged citizens to act responsibly and maintain dignity.

Pro-Russian bloc’s ties to Moscow

The Patriotic Electoral Bloc (BEP), which uses a hammer-and-sickle logo, advocates for closer ties with Russia. The bloc includes former communist leaders, such as ex-Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev and former President Igor Dodon. Other pro-Russian parties, including “Our Party” and the “Alternative” bloc, also participated in the elections, securing 6.2% and 8% of the vote, respectively.

Pro-European victory amid Russian interference

The pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) won the elections with over 50% of the vote, while BEP received 24.2%. The East European Studies Centre noted that Russia attempted to influence the results, allegedly spending up to 300 million euros. Social media campaigns targeted PAS leader Maia Sandu, falsely accusing her of damaging relations with Moscow and dragging Moldova into war.
