Two killed in Łódź fire; Prosecutor’s office calls it murder

A fire in a Łódź apartment building on September 28 claimed the lives of an 88-year-old woman and her 60+ caregiver, with prosecutors suspecting foul play.

Fire may have concealed a crime

The fire broke out in an apartment on Teofilów Street, engulfing a mattress and some furniture. The victims were an 88-year-old tenant and her over-60 caregiver. Prosecutors state the fire was not the direct cause of death; one victim had sharp-instrument wounds, and the other’s cause of death awaits autopsy results.

Three arrested

Police detained a woman and two men in connection with the case. Charges will be decided after interrogations and autopsy results, expected Tuesday. Investigators are treating the incident as a double homicide.

Firefighters’ dramatic response

Firefighters rescued one woman but failed to revive her. The second victim, severely injured, was not evacuated. The apartment was already filled with smoke when crews arrived. They accessed the home via scaffolding used by workers renovating the building’s facade. The apartment was secured for further investigation after extinguishing the fire.
