MV Hondius Crew Quarantined After Hantavirus Detected

After tourists were evacuated in the Canary Islands, 27 crew members of the MV Hondius remain in quarantine in the Netherlands due to a potential hantavirus outbreak on board.

Quarantine and Medical Status

Following the evacuation of tourists in the Canary Islands, 25 crew members and two medical personnel remain on the MV Hondius. They are subject to a quarantine period, which health authorities suggest could last up to 42 days, though the final duration remains under review.

According to reports from AP News, none of the individuals currently show any symptoms consistent with hantavirus infection.

Isolation Procedures in the Netherlands

Local authorities in the Netherlands have established isolation facilities at the port. Twenty-three crew members from the Philippines, Ukraine, Russia, and Poland will be housed in portable cabins, while four Dutch citizens have been directed to undergo home quarantine.

Public Concern and Operational Impact

The situation has raised public apprehension in the Netherlands regarding compliance with quarantine measures. While some residents expressed skepticism based on past experiences with pandemic restrictions, others remained composed after learning more about the specific circumstances.

Company operator Oceanwide Expeditions initially stated it did not foresee changes to its operations, but has since indicated that the ship’s future sailing schedule remains under assessment.

Hantavirus Characteristics and Risks

Hantaviruses are primarily transmitted via contact with rodents, their urine, feces, or saliva. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that human-to-human transmission is rare, though documented. Infection rates vary globally, with mortality rates reaching up to 15 percent in Asia and Europe, and 50 percent in the Americas.

Symptoms typically manifest one to eight weeks after exposure and include fever, headaches, muscle pain, and gastrointestinal distress. Treatment is focused on managing respiratory, cardiac, and renal complications.
