A Polish volunteer died in an Israeli strike on a humanitarian convoy in Gaza, but key documents remain classified.

New Findings

One and a half years after the Israeli military attack that killed 36-year-old Damian Soból from Przemyśl, many questions remain unanswered. The investigation, led by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Przemyśl, has stalled due to a lack of cooperation from Israel and the United States, which have not responded to Poland’s requests for legal assistance and evidence.

In June 2024, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski appealed to the Swiss-based International Fact-Finding Commission for Human Rights, which conducted an investigation and prepared a report. However, the report has not been made public.

MSZ Refuses to Disclose Information

The government’s position on the matter, issued in December 2024, has also not been published. The news portal requested these two documents from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MSZ). The ministry confirmed possessing both the Swiss report and the Polish government’s stance, acknowledging that they qualify as public information. However, it cited an exception for “diplomatic secrets” that could harm Poland’s foreign policy or international image.

The Death of a Polish Volunteer in Gaza

In April 2023, Israel attacked a humanitarian convoy in Gaza, killing seven volunteers from World Central Kitchen, including 36-year-old Damian Soból. The victims also included citizens of Australia, the UK, and a person with dual US-Canadian citizenship, as well as a Palestinian. The convoy was clearly marked with World Central Kitchen logos, and the Israeli military was informed of its route and had approved the passage. Medical sources indicate that the volunteers were wearing bulletproof vests with the organization’s logo.
