The Indian Ministry of Health announced that samples of a cough syrup tested above permissible limits of diethylene glycol.

The contaminant was also detected in samples taken directly from the production plant.

Diethylene glycol can damage kidneys, liver, and the nervous system.

Government Advises Against Prescribing Cough Syrup to Young Children

This week, authorities issued a statement recommending that cough and cold medicines not be prescribed or dispensed to children under two years old.

Investigations into Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan Deaths

Officials are examining whether the syrup contributed to the deaths of a nine‑year‑old in Madhya Pradesh and three children in Rajasthan.

At least three states have recalled the syrup from sale, according to local media.
