Surprising Baltic Sea Retreat: Water Recedes by Dozens of Meters

On Sunday, locals witnessed the Baltic Sea recede by several dozen metres, expanding Kołobrzeg’s beach almost to the mole—a strong southerly wind caused the event, which should lift by Monday.

Unusual phenomenon on the Baltic

Media and internet users reported that the Baltic Sea moved back several dozen metres, exposing the Kołobrzeg mole to the point that visitors could almost walk to it on dry feet.

Such an occurrence is said to happen only once every few decades, according to local news outlet Fakt.

The retreat is attributed to a powerful southerly wind, which is expected to subside by Monday.

IMGW warns about a storm

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued a warning on Saturday for the entire Baltic, noting that winds could reach Beaufort scale 9 during the storm.

Coastal alerts for strong wind are in effect, and on Sunday a warning was issued for north‑west Poland. Synoptic forecasters on October 5 also warned of an approaching storm with winds expected to be Beaufort 6‑7.
