Secured DNA Traces Hold Thief Accountable Three Years After Crime

A 37‑year‑old Radom resident arrested for drug possession will also face criminal liability for a stolen catalytic converter—an offense committed three years earlier—thanks to DNA traces left at the scene.

Drug Stop Reveals More

Traffic police in Radom pulled a Ford over for a routine check and found the driver carrying illegal substances. The suspect, a 37‑year‑old local, was taken to the station for drug possession. He was also identified as a suspect in a theft from 2022, part of a broader investigation into vehicle theft in the area.

DNA Evidence Secured at 2022 Crime Scene

When police investigated the catalytic‑converter theft, they collected DNA samples from a glove left behind by the perpetrator. The biological trace was preserved for forensic analysis. The glove matched the suspect’s DNA profile earned from later arrests.

Linking Past and Present Cases

After the glove’s DNA was sent to the crime lab, experts established the profile but initially could not match it to any listed offender. The case changed when a DNA profile obtained from a subsequent shop‑lifting arrest was entered into the database. That profile matched the 2022 thief’s DNA.

Potential Penalty of Up to Five Years

Because the suspect now carries both charges, he faces up to five years’ imprisonment for drug possession and the centuries‑old theft. Polish law treats both offenses as serious misdemeanours that can be compounded into a single sentence.
