Nawrocki Takes a Jab at Tusk: “Glad He Finally Listened to the President”

Following Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s declaration of unwavering support for US-Polish security cooperation, presidential official Karol Nawrocki publicly praised the Prime Minister for finally adopting a more responsible stance toward transatlantic relations.

Tusk Reaffirms Transatlantic Partnership

On Monday, May 18, during a conference marking the launch of an authorized service center for Abrams tanks, Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that there is no alternative to Polish-American and European-American friendship. He stated that signing the contract with the American corporation confirms the strength of this bond.

The Prime Minister expressed his conviction that current geopolitical turbulence will not undermine the mutual trust that serves as the foundation of European and American security. He stressed that from Poland’s perspective, transatlantic unity is the primary guarantor of stability, making the maintenance of these relationships a core governmental priority.

Nawrocki Credits Presidential Influence

When asked by journalist Marcin Wikło about the Prime Minister’s apparent shift in rhetoric—specifically contrasting recent comments with his April interview in the Financial Times, where he questioned the reliability of NATO’s Article 5—Karol Nawrocki welcomed the change.

Nawrocki remarked that if the Prime Minister has experienced a moment of reflection and realized that international discourse requires greater responsibility, it is a positive development. He expressed hope that Tusk will avoid further imprudent remarks about allies, noting that the groundwork for current strong Polish-American relations was established by the President.

Government Response to Pentagon Adjustments

Recent reports from Reuters and CNN indicated that the Pentagon has canceled plans to rotate four thousand soldiers into Poland, part of a broader reduction of US forces in Europe. Prime Minister Tusk assured the public that he and Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz are in contact with US leadership and NATO officials, insisting that these decisions are logistical and will not compromise Poland’s security.

Nawrocki countered that the government’s actions have led to misunderstandings, though he maintained that the commitments made by leaders like Donald Trump remain in force. Tusk, for his part, appealed to all political actors to avoid exploiting national security issues for temporary domestic political gain, urging a national consensus on defense matters.
