European Parliament endorses a draft resolution that would allow the shoot‑down of Russian drones and fighters, a decision set for adoption tomorrow in Strasbourg, according to a negotiated bill presented to the assembly.
Resolution to Shoot Down Russian Drones and Fighters
The European Parliament is backing a draft resolution that would give EU member states the legal basis to shoot down Russian drones and fighter aircraft intruding into their airspace. The text urges coordinated, proportionate actions and condemns Russia’s escalating attacks, while expressing solidarity with affected countries, including Poland.
Parliamentary Debate Highlights Cyber and Energy Concerns
On 8 Oct, a session in Strasbourg discussed Russia’s violations of EU airspace and the need for a robust response. MPs such as Andrzej Halicki praised the European Commission’s proposal to build a “drone wall” and urged stronger cyber‑defense. Polish MP Adam Bielan stressed that the Union must break its dependence on Russian energy and identified Moscow’s hybrid tactics as a threat to European security.
Commission Chair Urges Firm Response to Hybrid Warfare
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the Union has seen repeated breaches of airspace by Russian drones and aircraft over Poland, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium and Germany, and highlighted sabotage of undersea cables, airports and logistics hubs. She described the campaign as a “coherent, escalating hybrid war” designed to sow fear, split the Union and undermine support for Ukraine, calling for decisive action to counter it.
