A 33‑year‑old driver was charged with three offenses after striking a group of teenagers and causing a fatal crash at Łebieńska Works on 7 October.
Charges in Connection with the Łebieńska Works Accident
Prosecutors announced on 9 October that 33‑year‑old Marcin R. would face three charges. He allegedly drove a vehicle into a group of adolescent boys, one of whom died on the spot, while the others were hospitalized. He is accused of causing a traffic accident that resulted in one death, one serious injury, and two cases of direct medical damage.
The crime was committed under the influence of drugs and while intoxicated, and Marcin fled the scene. Additional charges include failure to render medical assistance to the victims and driving under the influence of narcotics in a state of intoxication. Prosecutors are seeking a prison term of 5 to 20 years.
Interrogation and Background of the Defendant
Marcin R. was questioned as a suspect and admitted to causing the traffic accident and failing to provide help. In other statements he partially recounted the incident, citing shock and incomplete memory. He fled the site, reportedly taking a taxi to a town 40 km away where he was subsequently detained.
During questioning he reportedly said, “It was a thing,” though prosecutors declined to assess the truth of the statement. An investigator described him as lacking empathy and decency. The defendant had previously been convicted in Denmark for a similar offense and was found to have no valid driver’s licence. Polish authorities have requested Danish documents and noted that they might influence any changes in the charges.
Details of the Tragedy at Łebieńska Works
The accident occurred on 7 October on provincial road 224 near Łebieńska Works, around 19:30. Visibility was limited and the road was unlit. Preliminary findings indicate the boys were riding bicycles at the roadside when they were struck by an Opel at speed.
The driver escaped the scene and abandoned the vehicle a few hundred metres later. A local journalist described the area as an unpaved stretch without a sidewalk or edge, located outside built-up surroundings. The victims were known to the community, having often played football in the vicinity.
