A formal request to strip Confederation MP Sławomir Mentzen of his parliamentary immunity has been submitted to the Sejm following his unauthorized use of pyrotechnics during last year’s Independence March.
Immunity status and political defense
Sławomir Mentzen confirmed on the X platform that a request to lift his immunity has reached the Sejm. The MP declared he has no intention of voluntarily waiving his protection, arguing that immunity is intended to shield the opposition during political activities, such as lighting a flare in front of a banner.
Bureaucratic delays and political criticism
Mentzen criticized the pace of the proceedings, noting the time taken to process the documentation. The incident occurred on November 11 of last year, yet the National Police Chief only sent the matter to Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek on March 20, 2026. Minister Żurek then spent a month forwarding the request to Speaker of the Sejm Włodzimierz Czarzaste, with the document finally arriving on May 19.
The Confederation MP mocked the government coalition’s efficiency, suggesting that the sluggish pace of bureaucratic procedures explains why figures like Zbigniew Ziobro were able to evade them and leave for the USA. He characterized the government’s progress on promised accountability measures as ineffective.
Background of the pyrotechnics incident
The case concerns events during last year’s Independence March, where Mentzen ignored the prohibition on using pyrotechnic materials. The MP documented the act, sharing photos of the flare on his social media accounts. The Metropolitan Police stated at the time that the case would proceed, leading to the current formal request for disciplinary action in the Sejm.
