Palestinians Celebrate Ceasefire, Yet Feel a Sea of Pain

Palestinians in Gaza celebrated the signing of a first‑stage ceasefire with Israel, amid relief and lingering doubts about the conflict’s future.

Egypt signs first‑stage ceasefire agreement

Final draft of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was signed by all negotiating parties in Egypt. The ceasefire will take effect within 24 hours after the security cabinet meeting ends, which began at 16:00 Warsaw time. Egyptian Red Crescent reported that 153 humanitarian trucks have crossed the Rafah border and are heading toward Gaza.

Gaza residents take to the streets

From Wednesday night to Thursday, residents left their homes to celebrate the agreement. Rescue services warned people not to hurriedly return to their previous residences, urging them to wait for the withdrawal of troops and further instructions. Despite the reduction in Israeli force, attacks continue, with tanks visible near the al‑Rashid road along the coast.

Relief tinged with scepticism

Reporter Tareq Abu Azzoum noted a palpable sense of collective relief, as families shouted and waved flags. Yet underneath the euphoria lurks scepticism, with fears that Israel could resume hostilities. Palestinians question Israel’s commitment to implementing the ceasefire conditions.

Children hope for normalcy

Interviewed children from a displaced persons camp spoke of dreams to return home, see friends, and attend school. “The war is over, everything is good. We can go out without fear,” one girl said. Another expressed hope that Gaza will be rebuilt and war never return.

Violence continues amid celebrations

Israeli forces, though at lower intensity, still launch attacks. Tanks on the al‑Rashid road were recorded, with crowds gathering there waiting for the road to be cleared. Despite celebrations, threats of renewed conflict loom.
