Coalition of Citizens Finalizes Unity; Convention Date and Venue Set

Poland’s Coalition of Citizens has confirmed its merger, setting a union convention for October 25 2023, with the venue still undecided between Pruszków and Warsaw.

Merger Background and Preparations

The Coalition of Citizens—formed by PO, Poland Initiative and Modern—has been preparing for a unity since last summer. Over recent weeks, field structures of all three parties have been merged, largely without conflict, according to a spokesperson from PO.

Merger Deadline Confirmed as Oct. 25

Uncertainty has long shadowed when the merger would finalize, but unofficial reports now fix the date at October 25. The timing aligns with the scheduled convention, said an associate of Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Convention Venue Still Uncertain

The location of the unification convention remains undecided. Pruszków is one candidate, but other sites—potentially Warsaw—are still under consideration, according to PO sources.

Convention Structure and Leadership Role

The convention will consist of an open session led by Prime Minister Tusk, who will outline a short‑term agenda, and a closed session focused on organizational issues. The new party must adopt a statute and set up leadership elections.

Future Leadership and Party Name

While the name “Coalition of Citizens” may persist, the new group’s leadership will top Tusk, with former leaders Adam Szłapka (government spokesman) and Barbara Nowacka (Minister of Education) as deputies. Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski and possibly Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski may also join the presidium.

Governance Elections Planned for Dec‑Jan

The selection of the new party’s governing bodies is scheduled for the end of December and the beginning of January.

PiS Drafts New Policy Programme

On the same day, Law and Justice will hold an October 25 convention in Katowice to unveil its policy platform. In an interview with Gazeta.pl, PiS leader Mariusz Błaszczak said the party will develop a campaign agenda to be presented to voters for the next parliamentary elections.
