Police report electrical fault sparked fire
On Sunday, 12 October, a fire broke out at Poznan’s Galeria Podolany mall. Police spokesperson Andrzej Borowiak said the blaze was caused by a short circuit in the electrical installation in rooms where the parrots were kept. An expert from the criminal court’s fire‑fighting division inspected the site.
All parrots in Kakadu aviary perished
Representatives from Kakadu Aviary, located on the first floor of Galeria Podolany, issued a statement on Monday that every bird present at the time of the fire had died. The owners expressed that the loss was “unimaginably painful” and described the parrots as having been part of their daily lives and hearts.
Number of birds lost remains unclear
Official figures have not yet been released. Local media have reported that around 70 birds died, whereas the Podolany Neighborhood Council said roughly 200 birds were lost, describing the event as the destruction of a beloved shopping space.
