Personal Statement from New Left Leader
In a Fakt LIVE interview, Robert Biedroń revealed that his partner Krzysztof Śmiszek is suffering from a serious illness, is on sick leave, and undergoing intensive therapy. He noted that a loved one’s illness changes perspectives and highlights life’s fragility during such moments.
Security Concerns for Informal Partnerships
Biedroń said current Polish laws do not sufficiently protect people in non‑formal relationships. Even after 23 years together, he feels unprotected and that having a sense of security is essential when making decisions about a partner’s welfare.
He added that expecting state protection is unrealistic and stressed the need for legal recognition that allows partners to make medical decisions.
Hope in a Proposed Bill for Partner Rights
The New Left, together with the Polish People’s Party, drafted a bill defining the status of those closest to a person, aimed to be acceptable to both conservative and liberal factions of the ruling coalition. The law would grant basic rights to partners, including the ability to make medical decisions.
Biedroń pledged his coalition’s support for the bill and urged swift approval, arguing that it would prevent many from feeling helpless in similar crises.
