On Monday 20 October a post from the President’s office on X addressed the draft bill on the status of a close person. The message reiterated that the initiative should not erode the constitutional protection of marriage.
Nawrocki Declares His Opposition to Marriage‑Undermining Law
Karol Nawrocki stated that he will not sign any law that “undermines the status of marriage, which is protected by the Constitution.” He added he is ready for discussion on the status of a close person but insists it must not approach the protected institution of marriage.
PSL‑Left Bill Sets Out Rights and Obligations
The bill, co‑drafted by the PSL and the Left, proposes provisions for housing rights, access to medical information, and joint tax settlement under a notarised agreement. According to GUS data from 2021, almost 900 thousand Poles remain in informal unions.
Public Opinion on Partnership Legislation
When surveyed, 54 % of Poles support a law regulating partnership relationships, whereas 34 % oppose it. Krzysztof Brejza, a Member of the European Parliament from the Civic Coalition, highlighted this statistic in reference to Nawrocki’s stance.

Paweł Szefernaker told X that “marriage and family are under the protection and care of the Republic” and that the president would not allow the new institution of a close person to be linked exclusively to marriages.
