Polish former foreign minister Radosław Sikorski fired back at Hungary’s Ex‑Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto after the latter criticized a possible flight of Vladimir Putin over Polish airspace toward a Budapest summit.

Hungarian FM Criticizes Putin Flight

Peter Szijjarto said it was uncertain whether an independent Polish court could order the Hungarian government to land Vladimir Putin’s plane over Poland en route to a potential summit with Donald Trump in Budapest. The comment was framed as a challenge to Poland’s judicial independence.

Radosław Sikorski replied that Poland could not guarantee that the court would compel the government to bring the plane down or hand the suspect over to The Hague, and expressed pride in the Polish judiciary’s autonomy.

Earlier Exchange on NordStream Sabotage

In earlier remarks on X, Szijjarto criticized Poland’s court decision regarding a suspect of the NordStream 2 sabotage, labeling it “scandalous” and suggesting it tacitly supported terrorism in Europe.

Sikorski countered that Poland had not “released” a terrorist and emphasized that the court’s decision on 17 October denied Germany the European Arrest Warrant for the suspect, upholding Poland’s defensive stance.

Moscow Stays Engaged in Budapest Summit

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that the Ukraine‑Russia‑Poland summit required careful preparation and timing, while Trump had previously postponed a similar meeting.

Experts highlighted that Russia remains unwilling to agree to a front‑line armament freeze, and that Ukraine’s Zelensky, backed by European leaders, supports Trump’s proposal for a potential ceasefire.
