Giertych Defends New Hope MP Berkowicz Amid Ikea Theft Allegations

Roman Giertych publicly backs New Hope deputy Konrad Berkowicz after accusations that he stole 390 PLN worth of goods from Ikea, prompting reactions from other politicians and police confirmation.

Alleged theft and police confirmation

Reports from a Radia Zet journalist claimed that Konrad Berkowicz was caught taking goods valued at 390 PLN from an Ikea store. Police were called to the scene and the MP later paid a 500‑PLN fine. Sources confirmed that the incident occurred after checkout and that Berkowicz did not invoke parliamentary immunity.

Giertych’s controversial defense

Conservative MP Roman Giertych posted on X that his “mocking posts” about Berkowicz were “not taken seriously because he had headphones on” and that the “translations” somehow reached him. He also stated that the real “theft of the day” was the CPK plot and that PiS might be able to escape it.

Tusk and other politicians reply

Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized the incident, saying “one of the Confederation leaders caught trying to steal in Ikea; we should start from somewhere.” Other MPs, such as Emil Krawczyk, questioned why the audit on the CPK land did not disclose the KOWR plot, and Tomasz Grabarczyk defended Berkowicz, claiming he simply forgot to bag items while listening to headphones.

Official and media comments

The spokesperson for the Minister of Coordination of Special Forces, Jacek Dobrzyński, described the situation as a “total collapse” and expressed disbelief that “not everything was packed.” He suggested that the incident would be clearly visible on security camera footage.

Polish media noted that the goods in question, including a frying pan, meal set, nylon bag packages, apron, USB cables, and USB weights, amounted to exactly 394.95 PLN.
