A 30-year-old man, identified as an Italian citizen born in Bergamo, has been detained after driving at high speed into pedestrians and a storefront in Modena, leaving eight people injured.
Circumstances of the Attack
According to the Ansa news agency, the suspect is a 30-year-old man of North African origin residing in the province of Modena. Massimo Mezzetti, the Mayor of Modena, confirmed that the individual is an Italian citizen born in Bergamo. Reports from witnesses indicate the vehicle was traveling at speeds exceeding 100 km/h and was driven into pedestrians intentionally.
Casualties and Public Response
At least eight people were injured in the incident, with three reported to be in serious condition. The victims were transported to a hospital in Bologna. Following the crash, the suspect exited the vehicle and attempted to flee, during which he reportedly stabbed one person.
Apprehension and Official Reaction
Passersby intervened, pursuing the suspect and detaining him until police arrived. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Mayor Mezzetti publicly thanked the citizens for their courage in stopping the armed individual. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has since identified the suspect on social media.
