A 500‑metre strip of Mielno beach turned purple, shocking travelers until local scientists explained the natural origin, said the Głos Koszaliński report.

The Głos Koszaliński reported that a roughly 500‑metre stretch of the Mielno beach, located east of the Jamneń Channel, became purple. “At first I thought someone had dumped some poison here,” said Mr. Tomasz in an interview with journalists. “But later I saw that in the layers of sand, washed by the storm, the entire vein of the purple earth was visible,” he added. The observation gave him confidence that the phenomenon was natural.
Reasons for the Unusual Phenomenon
Ewa Wieczorek, spokesperson for the Szczecin Maritime Office, said the purple streaks appeared due to minerals belonging to the silicate group. “We especially see this on the middle coast,” she told the Głos Koszaliński. Professor Leszek Łęczyński of the University of Gdańsk explained last year that the phenomenon is a result of mineral accumulation and selective deposition.
