Błaszczak Strikes at Tusk over Ziobro; Accuses Putin‑Style Tactics

On 5 Nov. Mariusz Błaszczak blasted Donald Tusk for handling the pending Ziobro investigation, accusing the former prime minister of adopting “Putin‑style” tactics, while Tusk warned that Ziobro could evade interim arrest.

Błaszczak Criticises Tusk’s Approach

On Wednesday 5 November, Mariusz Błaszczak said the Sejm’s Rules of Procedure, Parliamentary Affairs and Immunity Committee would decide on Zbigniew Ziobro as Tusk had announced twice. He decried that Tusk’s tactics resembled a “Putin‑style” approach, citing the former prime minister’s silence at press conferences and his decision to issue directives only during the cabinet meeting.

Tusk Raises Concerns About Ziobro

Before the Tuesday cabinet meeting, Tusk addressed Ziobro, urging him not to evade judicial scrutiny and to appear before an independent court. Tusk echoed earlier accusations that Ziobro might try to escape temporary arrest, mirroring words previously directed at him.

Pending Charges and Immunity Issues for Ziobro

Ziobro faces 26 alleged offences, including neglecting duties, exceeding powers, forming and directing a criminal group, and misappropriating from the Justice Fund. The committee must abrogate his parliamentary immunity to bring charges. Prosecutors fear the politician could hamper investigations, so Waldemar Żurek requested temporary arrest, a request the committee will examine. Ziobro recently travelled to Hungary and reportedly met Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
