Parliament to Scrutinize Former Justice Minister’s Medical Report and Vote to Strip His Immunity

Poland’s Parliament will review a former Justice Minister’s medical assessment, while moving to strip him of parliamentary immunity over fraud and organized‑crime allegations.

Doctor Review Over Ziobra Health Report

Radio ESKA announced a medical review of former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, following criticism from PiS MP Jacek Ozdoba that the original health evaluation was issued without examining the patient or reviewing full documentation. The assessment holds that Ziobro’s health status could justify his arrest or temporary pre‑trial detention if his condition worsened.

Iwona Kania of the Polish Medical Association warned that the doctor’s review could reveal professional negligence. The matter is now under the jurisdiction of the chief professional liability spokesperson.

Parliament Votes to Strip Immunity of Former Justice Minister

On Friday, the Sejm will vote to remove Ziobro’s parliamentary immunity, allowing his arrest. Prosecutors seek 26 charges, including leading an organized crime group and defrauding funds from the Fund of Justice.

Dr. Szymon Tarapata of the Jagiellonian University stated that once immunity is lifted, the relevant actions would be implemented swiftly, depending on the efficiency of the prosecution and judicial services.

Background of Fund of Justice Fraud Investigation

The immunity removal petition focuses on the defrauding of funds from the Fund of Justice, alleged to have been transferred to unauthorized parties and certain grants disbursed improperly. Former deputy justice minister Marcin Romanowski is also a suspect, having sought asylum in Hungary.

The investigation examines the involvement of other PiS MPs, including Dariusz Matecki, and spans a prosecution document exceeding 200 pages addressing eight additional individuals.
