Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed the final version of an 800+ benefit law for Ukrainians, declaring it his last approval and warning the government of looming chaos.
800+ Benefit for Ukrainian Citizens
President Nawrocki explained that the original draft of the law intended to provide the 800+ benefit to Ukrainian nationals even if they were not working in Poland. He deemed this arrangement unfair to Poles and refused to sign it. Only after revisions that partially addressed his concerns did he approve the law.
He reiterated that this would be his last instance of endorsing such legislation, noting that, after three years of war, Ukrainians in Poland should be treated under the same principles as other national minorities and that future measures must be realistic and just.
Warning of ‘Chaos’ to Tusk’s Government
Nawrocki urged the government to devise policies that safeguard Polish welfare while allowing Ukrainian presence in the country. He warned that inconsistent policies could lead to “chaos in March next year.”
The president stressed he expects cooperation from the government and parliamentary majority but will oppose any law that grants Ukrainians a privileged position over Polish citizens.
First 100 Days: Poland and Poles First
During a commemorative dinner, Nawrocki highlighted that every decision takes priority for Poland and Poles, echoing his campaign pledge. He addressed voters who had not supported him, affirming his daily work for their security and prosperity.
The Civic Coalition launched a website tracking the president’s vetoes. Nawrocki reported signing 70 laws and vetoing 13, arguing that the number of vetoes is insufficient to label him a “wetometer” and that veto power is an integral part of Poland’s system, exercised with the mandate of the electorate.
