A 40‑centimetre anti‑aircraft projectile was discovered on the grounds of a Białołęka elementary school, leading the administration to cancel all classes on 21 November while authorities secure the site.
Location and Discovery
During demolition work on a former building near the new gymnasium on Zaułek 34, workers uncovered a 40‑centimetre projectile on 20 November at about 15:00. The object immediately raised concerns and was reported to police.
Object Identified
Police spokesperson Paulina Onyszko confirmed that the item was an anti‑aircraft projectile likely dating from World War II. The find matched typical military ordnance of the era.
Police Response
Law enforcement cordoned off the site and maintained 24‑hour vigilance until a specialized sappers team arrived to assess and remove the explosive safely.
School Suspension and Safety Arrangements
Principal Urszula Orzechowska announced on 21 November that all instructional activities would be suspended for the day. She coordinated this decision with the Warsaw Education Office, ensuring students who could not stay home would be taken to secure locations such as the Green Library.
Future Work and Resumption
No evacuation of the building was ordered, but the area remains restricted until de‑mining is complete. The school plans to resume normal operations, most likely on Monday, while construction of the new gymnasium will continue.
