Afternoon and evening traffic snarls around the Warsaw Market near the Palace of Culture and Science froze main streets in the city centre, crippling both cars and public transport.
Central streets frozen by congestion
Afternoon and evening traffic jams around the Warsaw Market near the Palace of Culture and Science halted the main streets of the city centre, and buses trapped in the snarls suffered the greatest delays.
Complete blockage of Maršalowski Street
Maršalowski Street—from Constitution Square to Prince’s Street—was clogged, with drivers only making short “jumps” between traffic lights.
Gridlock on Świętokrzyska and Jana Pawła II
On Świętokrzyska Street—from Jana Pawła II Avenue to Nowego Świata—a traffic jam formed on the section leading directly to pedestrian access to the market and the Centrum and Świętokrzyska metro stations.
Slowed traffic on Jerozolimskie Avenues and surrounding streets
Significant delays were seen on Jerozolimskie Avenues from the de Gaulle roundabout to Żelazna Street, including the Dmowski roundabout and Central Station. Emília Plater Street and Jana Pawła II Avenue between Jerozolimskie Avenues and Świętokrzyska Street were heavily slowed, and Chałubińskiego Street from Koszykowa to Jerozolimskie Avenues merged into the gridlock near the station and office blocks.
Public transport largely maintained flow
Trams and metros serving stations near the Palace of Culture and Science were full yet remained the most fluid due to dedicated tracks and an underground route. Buses, however, stood in the same jams as cars, causing irregular intervals and longer centre traversal times.
