80‑Year‑Old Driver Abandoned Wounded Pedestrian in Warsaw Crash

An 80‑year‑old man left a 20‑year‑old pedestrian on the road after a hit‑and‑run on Strzelecka Street, Praga Północ, on Friday, 21 November.

Incident Details

On Friday night, around 10:30 p.m., a driver struck a pedestrian on a marked crosswalk at Strzelecka Street in Praga Północ. The driver fled the scene without assisting the injured 20‑year‑old, who was taken to hospital. Doctors ruled the victim stable but kept him under observation.

Police Investigation

Traffic Department officers from Warsaw City Police arrived on the scene, interviewed witnesses, photographed the area, and collected a fragment of a license plate believed to belong to the suspect’s vehicle. Surveillance footage from nearby cameras was also secured.

Identifying the Vehicle and Driver

Criminal Police from the Praga Północ command reviewed the footage and identified a silver Opel involved in the crash. The vehicle’s description was broadcast to all patrols, and officers searched surrounding streets to halt the car.

Detainment and Charges

After locating the vehicle, officers detained the 80‑year‑old owner, a resident of Targówek who had previously been convicted and whose driving licence had been revoked. He denied participation. His Opel was seized for examination. On Friday, a prosecutor from the Warsaw Praga Północ District charged him with negligent causing an accident, fleeing without assistance, endangering life, and driving with a revoked licence, and applied police surveillance.
