Live Studio Debate Over the Veto
During a Sunday live broadcast, President Karol Nawrocki’s veto of the bill on cryptocurrency markets sparked a fiery exchange between party leaders. Bartosz Arłukowicz of the Civic Coalition criticized the PiS “dark and dirty” climate, accusing the ruling party of leaning on crypto interests. Tobiasz Bocheński described the confrontations as theatrical and mocking.
Arłukowicz questioned whether a firm that sponsored the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP) also supported PiS, and demanded that PiS keep its “PiS paws” away from WOŚP. He further accused former Prime Minister Donald Tusk of politicizing the issue and urged the leader to report any criminal activity to the prosecutor’s office.
Parliamentary Vote Against the Veto
On Friday, the Sejm rejected Nawrocki’s veto to the crypto‑law without a sufficient three‑fifths majority. Two hundred forty‑three MPs voted for the veto, 192 against, and none abstained. The bill was not signed by the president, who warned that the new regulations might grant excessive powers to the National Bank’s supervisory commission.
Nawrocki argued that the law could enable easy blocking of accounts and threaten economic freedom. The government and security services claim that the lack of regulation creates opportunities for foreign intelligence, arguing that Russian agencies could use cryptocurrencies to finance sabotage operations, including arson.
