Paving of S8 Route Paralyzes Traffic, 9‑km Jam

A 9‑kilometre traffic jam erupted on Warsaw’s S8 motorway on 7 December after afternoon paving closed two lanes between the Zachód and Konotopa junctions, leaving only one lane open.

Date and Scope of Work

On 7 December, workers commenced paving on the Warsaw S8 motorway between the Zachód and Konotopa junctions in the afternoon, closing two of the three lanes toward Konotopa and leaving motorists with only a single lane.

Traffic Impact and Jam Length

The lane closure immediately created a long traffic jam that stretched almost 9 kilometres up to the area of Księcia Janusza Street, the longest on that segment.

Alternative Routes and Ripple Effects

Drivers sought alternatives such as Aleja Prymasa Tysiąclecia and Aleje Jerozolimskie, but the increased volume on those roads caused additional delays and congestion there as well.

Work Timing and Reason for Disruption

Unlike previous night‑time sessions after 10 pm, the paving began in the afternoon during a period of high pre‑holiday traffic, magnifying the disruption for S8 users and those traveling to the S2 and A2 roads.
