Incident at Wronki rink

On Sunday, December 7, a 10‑year‑old boy fell face‑down onto the ice at a rink in Wronki, Poland, injuring his face. An emergency helicopter from the Polish Air Rescue Service air‑lifted him to a hospital in Poznań.

No helmet on child

Radio Poznań reported that the boy was not wearing a helmet when the fall occurred.

Rink staff urged helmet use

Rink employees had asked the boy’s parent to fasten a helmet on him, but the request was ignored. According to Dariusz Dereń, operator of the facility, helmets are supplied at the rink but they cannot be enforced.

Boy’s injuries non‑serious; back to school

Doctors determined that the boy’s injuries were not serious, and he returned to school on Monday.

Earlier fatal incident on frozen pond

In 2012, a 56‑year‑old man, Leszek, died after falling onto the ice of a frozen pond in Szczecin while attempting a “puzzle” maneuver, travelling backwards. His wife, Jolanta, later recalled that the skate slipped, he fell with a thud, striking the back of his head on the ice, and he could not cushion the impact in the split second before the fall.
