Warsaw’s city council has earmarked funds in the 2026 budget to kick off design work on three new metro stations extending the M2 line to Ursus, marking a top transport priority.
Budget Adoption and Transport Priorities
During the Council session, the 2026 municipal budget and the 2026–2030 Multi‑Year Financial Forecast were adopted. The extension of the M2 line into Ursus was highlighted as a key transport investment.
Councilors emphasized that securing prep‑funds for the project places it among the city’s top priorities for the coming years.
Financial Commitment Details
City officials will allocate roughly 5 billion PLN to public transport, including metro expansion. In 2026 alone, the greatest capital outlay will be the M2 extension, exceeding 723 million PLN.
The 2026 budget earmarks money specifically for design work on three new stations, a decisive step toward improving residents’ quality of life.
Project Scope and Planned Stations
The extension stretches from Karolin technical station toward Ursus, adding Ursus Niedźwiadek, Posag 7 Panien (Szamoty), and Ursus Północny.
Both new stations will integrate with existing railway stops for seamless transfers between the metro, SKM, and Masovian Railway.
Transport Integration and City Goals
The new links aim to shift passenger flow from overcrowded suburban marshalling yards onto the metro, easing pressure on current rail and road networks.
By providing direct access for residents of neighboring towns such as Piastów, the upgrade could boost regional mobility and stimulate further development.
Community Advocacy and Petition
Local activists organized the “Metro in Ursus” campaign, gathering nearly 7,000 signatures in 2025 to push the project into official budgets.
The Ursus District Council has repeatedly backed the metro, citing demographic growth and potential for up to 35,000 new residents from upcoming housing projects.
Long‑Term Metro Vision
The M2 extension fits into Warsaw’s 2050 master plan for a 28‑station line, with further phases depending on financing and EU funds.
Exact construction start dates remain undefined, as timelines will align with funding availability and future investment decisions.
