Hungarian Opposition Leader Peter Magyar Flares at Russia, Demands Immediate Action

Peter Magyar, head of the Party of Honour and Freedom, condemned Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service report on Hungary by writing a letter to the Russian ambassador in Hungary, demanding swift explanations and an assurance that Russia will cease any interference in Hungary’s political processes.

Peter Magyar writes to the Russian ambassador in Hungary

Leader Peter Magyar published a letter to the Russian ambassador in Budapest on Facebook, reacting to the report issued by Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SWR) concerning Hungary. He called the document an unacceptable intrusion into Hungarian political affairs and demanded that the Russian embassy immediately submit an explanation regarding the SWR report. Additionally, Magyar requested that Russia guarantees it will refrain from any actions that could be considered interference in Hungary’s internal political processes, including disinformation campaigns, cyber operations, and intimidation of political actors and citizens.

Peter Magyar on Cooperation between Hungary and Russia

Magyar emphasized that Hungary’s sovereignty and the inviolability of its democratic processes are non-negotiable principles. He asserted that respecting these principles is the minimum requirement for any potential bilateral cooperation between Hungary and Russia. “In the name of my party and all Hungarian citizens, I plainly state that Hungary’s sovereignty belongs solely to the Hungarian people. No foreign power, whether an ally, opponent, or any other entity, has the right to attempt to shape our political future or decide the outcome of our elections,” he wrote.

Russian Intelligence Claims EU Supports Magyar

The SWR report from August 13 alleges that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is examining scenarios that could lead to a change in power in Budapest and that she considers Magyar the best candidate for Hungary’s next prime minister, labeling him as loyal to global elites. The report also states that the European Union allegedly mobilized substantial material, administrative, and media resources to facilitate Magyar’s takeover after the upcoming parliamentary elections next year.

Hungary: Peter Magyar Responds to SWR Report Statements

Magyar dismissed the SWR’s claims about alleged support from EU politicians as entirely baseless. He warned that such assertions by an opposing state’s intelligence service could only serve to influence Hungarian voters, distort public debate, and erode trust in Hungary’s democracy.
