Warsaw police have arrested three teenagers from Białystok who traveled to the capital to sell counterfeit mobile phones through an online “buy one, get one free” scam that defrauded a victim of thousands of zlotys.
The Anatomy of a Scam
Officers from the Wilcza Street police station arrested two 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old following a report from a victim who had purchased two high-end phones at a “two-for-one” price. After meeting the suspects in Warsaw and completing the transaction, the buyer discovered the devices were realistic-looking fakes, resulting in a loss of several thousand zlotys.
Investigation and Capture
Detectives from the Wilcza Street unit tracked the suspects, who were found to be operating from Białystok. The group had purchased dozens of counterfeit phones on the black market and marketed them online with deceptive promotional offers. They frequently traveled by train to Warsaw to finalize the sales in person.
Legal Consequences
Police investigators traveled to Białystok, where they located and seized the remaining counterfeit stock. The 17-year-old suspect now faces formal fraud charges, while the two 16-year-olds will face proceedings in family court. The suspects were subsequently brought to the Wilcza Street station to face the authorities.
A Warning to Consumers
This case serves as a reminder to exercise extreme caution when encountering online deals that seem too good to be true. Criminals frequently exploit the desire for a bargain to execute fraudulent schemes using sophisticated deception techniques.
