Cezary Miżejewski, a veteran Polish politician and labour union leader, died in late 2023.
Political Career
Cezary Miżejewski served as a Member of the Sejm after being elected from the Left Democratic Alliance list in 1993. In March 1994 he joined the parliamentary club of the Polish Socialist Party. He failed to secure a parliamentary seat again in 1997.
Union Leadership
He was a co‑founder of the trade‑union Confederation of Labour and served as chairman of the National Association of Auditors of Social Cooperatives. In recent years he also acted as vice‑chairman of the Polish Committee of the European Anti‑Poverty Network.
Recent Roles
In 2002 he advised Minister of Labour and Social Policy Jerzy Hausner, becoming in 2003 head of the department of the labour market at the ministry. From February 2004 he held the post of state secretary at the Ministry of Economy, Labour and Social Policy, later at the Ministry of Social Policy until December. He served as deputy minister of labour and social policy until November 2005 and, for several years, as an advisor to the Minister in the Ministry of Regional Development.
Tributes
The Polish Federation of Workers of Social and Social Assistance noted: “Always dedicated to labour affairs and social assistance. Cezary will remain in our memory forever.” The Confederation of Labour added: “He will be remembered as highly engaged, responsible and loyal to our common ideals.”
Minister Agnieszka Dziemianowicz‑Bąk wrote: “An extremely sad news. Cezary Miżejewski, social activist, cooperant, trade‑unionist, opposition activist, Member of Parliament, deputy minister of labour and social policy – a good, sensitive and wise man.” She praised his work on social policy reforms and his unwavering commitment to change.
Minister Katarzyna Nowakowska also paid tribute: “I met Cezary just before starting my work at the ministry and have repeatedly collaborated with him in areas of social economy and social assistance. He was a model of perseverance and daily engagement.”
