A 23-year-old Polish student suffering from severe complications following an ovarian teratoma has been successfully transported from Beijing to a military hospital in Wrocław via a dedicated government medical flight.
Medical Emergency in Beijing
Klaudia, a student in Beijing, required urgent medical intervention after being diagnosed with an ovarian teratoma in mid-April. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, resulting in acute peritonitis, pneumonia, encephalitis, duodenal perforation, and a liver abscess.
Her mother, Joanna, reported that while the tumor was removed, the complications have caused extensive damage to her daughter’s body. The 23-year-old remains in a coma and is currently connected to a ventilator.
Logistics of the Military Evacuation
The high costs of treatment in China and the logistical complexity of transporting a patient in a coma necessitated intervention from the Ministry of National Defence. Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the authorization for the special flight on May 31.
The Boeing 737 landed in Wrocław on June 3 after a 12-hour journey requiring overflight permits from 13 countries. The patient was accompanied by a military medical team and is now being transferred to the Military Clinical Hospital for further examination.
Financial Burden and Treatment Costs
Medical expenses in China exceeded 100,000 dollars, with intensive care costs reaching over 5,000 PLN per day, excluding medications and additional procedures. Klaudia’s insurance coverage has been exhausted.
The student’s family has successfully raised over one million PLN through a fundraising campaign. These funds are designated to cover the outstanding bills in Beijing and the upcoming rehabilitation process in Poland.
