Poland has decided to transfer up to nine MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine to support its defense against Russian aggression.
Transfer Decision
Polish Deputy Minister of Defense Paweł Zalewski announced that a decision has been made to transfer up to nine MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. This donation is part of Poland’s allied policy to support Ukraine and maintain security on the eastern flank of NATO.
The technical details of the transfer are currently being discussed with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, Zalewski stated, adding that these are technical matters requiring clarification.
NATO Security Policy
The donation of aircraft is part of an allied policy to support Ukraine and maintain security on NATO’s eastern flank. The tasks of the decommissioned MiG-29 aircraft will be taken over by F-16 and FA-50 aircraft.
Previous Talks
In early December, the Polish General Staff reported that talks were underway with Ukraine regarding the transfer of MiG-29 aircraft.
During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in mid-December, Polish President Karol Nawrocki stated that the matter had been resolved, with only formalities remaining. The presidents discussed common strategic goals, including security, economy, and historical issues.
