Ukrainian President Zelenski responds to Trump’s claim that he is the obstacle blocking peace talks with Russia.
Zelenski Rejects Trump’s Obstacle Claim
Ukraine has never been and will never be an obstacle on the path to peace, said Ukrainian President Wołodymyr Zełenski in a Thursday evening address. He stated that Russian missiles, drones, and attempts to destroy Ukraine demonstrate Russia’s lack of interest in agreements.
When Ukrainians are without power for 20-30 hours due to Russian attacks targeting their energy system, it is Russia that should be pressured, Zełenski emphasized. He announced Ukraine will conduct diplomatic activities more actively, both publicly and privately.
Trump Claims Ukraine Is Less Ready for Peace
U.S. President Donald Trump told Reuters that Vladimir Putin is “ready to make a deal” but suggested Ukraine is “less ready” for an agreement. When asked what obstacle stood in the way of peace, Trump pointed to “Zelenski,” saying the U.S. administration must “convince the President of Ukraine to agree.”
Putin Proposes Substantive Peace Discussion
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that the war in Ukraine is a “direct consequence” of “long-term ignoring of Russia’s legitimate interests” and “NATO expansion towards Russia’s borders.” He claimed Russia has proposed rational solutions that could satisfy all parties.
Putin said it is “worth returning to a substantive discussion” to work out conditions for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, adding “the sooner, the better.” Despite ongoing attacks on Ukrainian settlements, Putin assured his country seeks “a lasting peace that will reliably provide security for all.”
