During the Oval Office talks, a map of Ukraine highlighting Russian‑controlled territories was displayed, serving as a pressure tool on President Zelensky.
Map of Territories Controlled by Russia
During the briefing, a map of Ukraine showing the territories under Russian control was displayed. Highlighted in pink, the map represents roughly 20% of Ukraine’s eastern land. The BBC described it as a “cold reminder” of the nation’s state after nearly four years of war. Analysts say the map is intended to pressure Zelensky into conceding territory in exchange for peace.
Trump on Potential Territorial Exchange
In a private session at the White House with Zelensky and European leaders, President Trump stated that discussions must include the possibility of a territorial exchange. He suggested that an agreement could be reached during the same meeting to secure guarantees for Ukraine. President Putin had already indicated that Russia would accept security guarantees, which Trump said should mirror NATO’s Article 5. He added that European forces could play a pivotal role in securing peace in Ukraine, with the United States providing necessary support.
Without a Ceasefire
Trump reiterated that he does not expect a ceasefire before a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. He noted that from a strategic standpoint, the state may not want a temporary halt to hostilities. “We have a ceasefire and they are rebuilding,” Trump said. “We favor a ceasefire because people would stop dying immediately rather than weeks or months later. Still, we can work toward a peace agreement while combat continues. They must fight, and I would like them to stop, but strategically it may be disadvantageous for either side.”
