Authorities Force Entry into Apartment; Bodies of Woman and Three Children Found Inside

Four dead in Chełmno carbon monoxide poisoning; woman and children discovered after authorities forced entry to apartment.

Incident Details

On Thursday, January 15 in Chełmno (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship), a tragic carbon monoxide poisoning occurred in one of the apartments on Stare Planty Street. Four people died – a 31-year-old woman and her three children.

Emergency Response

The call to services came in the afternoon. Firefighters were called to forcibly open the apartment, as there had been no contact with the woman and children for several days, and concerned relatives informed the appropriate services. Upon entering the premises, the bodies of four people were discovered.

Victim Information

According to Capt. mgr inż. Kasper Korczak from the District Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Chełmno, firefighters’ measuring devices showed over 900 ppm of carbon monoxide in the apartment. The victims were the mother and children aged approximately 3, 11, and 12 years old.

Investigation Update

Police are conducting activities at the scene under the supervision of a prosecutor. Initially, it was indicated that the source of the hazard could have been a flow-through water heater, but the causes and exact circumstances are to be explained in the course of an investigation with the participation of experts. According to information provided by the police, the services were alerted by a family member who could not contact the woman from the beginning of the week.
