Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Greenland

As diplomatic tensions rise over Greenland, President Trump threatens tariffs to force U.S. control, rejecting alternatives.

Trump’s Stance

Amid escalating diplomatic tensions over Greenland, a Danish territory, President Trump stated the U.S. “needs Greenland for national security” and threatened tariffs on countries that oppose U.S. control. He dismissed alternatives like increased military presence or a NATO mission proposed by Germany, suggesting the U.S. might “choose” between Greenland and NATO.

Special envoy for Greenland, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, emphasized the White House is seriously pursuing control, expressing confidence a deal can be reached.

Danish Response

General Soeren Andersen of Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command reported no Chinese or Russian naval presence near Greenland, contradicting Trump’s claims. He invited U.S. troops to join military exercises on the island, noting no decision on their participation has been made.

Eleven bipartisan U.S. Congress members met with Danish and Greenlandic officials in Copenhagen to “reduce temperature” in relations following Trump’s confrontational stance.

International Reactions

A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed 47% of Americans oppose Trump’s Greenland plans, while only 17% support them. Polish authorities are dispatching their ambassador to Denmark to assess the situation, including checking on Polish residents’ need for a consulate.

European countries including Sweden, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Finland will send troops to Greenland exercises. Poland’s defense minister emphasized prioritizing Western unity and NATO, confirming Poland won’t deploy soldiers.

Greenland’s Opposition

Anti-American solidarity protests with Greenland are planned for Saturday in Copenhagen and other Danish cities, with the slogan “We are not for sale.” A demonstration will also occur in Nuuk, highlighting rising social tensions and resident rejection of foreign territorial acquisition narratives.
