European Leaders Condemn Trump’s Threats, Vow Not to Be Blackmailed

European leaders including Macron, Kristersson, and von der Leyen condemn Trump’s threats, vowing not to be blackmailed on Arctic security and Ukraine.

Macron’s Response

President Emmanuel Macron stated that “no threats or intimidation can influence us.” He emphasized that France supports sovereignty and independence of nations, both in Europe and worldwide. Macron confirmed France’s support for Ukraine and announced the country’s participation in exercises in Greenland initiated by Denmark.

“The stakes are the security of the Arctic and Europe’s borders. We will maintain this decision. Threats or intimidation cannot influence us, neither regarding Ukraine nor Greenland,” Macron wrote, adding that he is contacting European partners regarding US threats.

Swedish Prime Minister’s Statement

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson declared, “We will not be blackmailed.” He emphasized that only Denmark and Greenland decide matters concerning them, stating he would always stand by his country and neighboring allies.

Sweden is conducting intensive discussions with other EU countries, Norway, and the UK regarding a common response to the situation.

European Commission’s Position

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that “tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations.” She affirmed that “Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to maintaining its sovereignty.”

She highlighted that “territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law” necessary for Europe and the international community. The EU fully stands with Denmark and the people of Greenland and plans further talks with the US.

European Council’s Statement

European Council President Antonio Costa emphasized that “territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law.” He noted that preliminary coordinated Danish exercises with allies strengthen Arctic security and pose no threat.

“The EU expresses full solidarity with Denmark and Greenland residents. Dialogue remains essential, and we are committed to developing the process initiated between Denmark and the US,” Costa wrote, reiterating that tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations.
