USA Sends Additional Military to Greenland, NORAD Issues Statement

NORAD announces deployment of aircraft to Greenland’s Pituffik base amid enduring defense cooperation with Denmark and Canada.

USA Sends Military to Greenland

The United States is sending military forces to Greenland as part of its defense operations in the region.

NORAD’s January Announcement

On Monday, January 19, NORAD issued a statement informing that its aircraft will soon arrive at the American base Pituffik in Greenland. According to the command, these aircraft, operating alongside those from bases in continental United States and Canada, will support various long-planned NORAD operations based on enduring defense cooperation between the USA, Canada, and the Kingdom of Denmark.

Danish Authorities Informed

The U.S. military assured that these actions are coordinated with Danish authorities and are being taken with the required diplomatic permits. The government of Greenland is also being informed about these developments. NORAD routinely conducts continuous, dispersed operations in defense of North America through its three regions: Alaska, Canada, and continental United States.

U.S. Presence in Greenland

The presence of American military in Greenland is enabled by a 1951 agreement with Denmark. As noted in Gazeta.pl, the USA itself began reducing its presence there for decades. Despite this, the White House has accused Europe of showing too little interest in the island. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance stated on January 8, “We know that enemies show interest in this specific territory and this piece of the world, so what we ask of our European friends is to take the security of this island more seriously, because if they don’t, the USA will have to take care of it.”

Arctic Endurance Exercises Underway

Currently, the Arctic Endurance operation is being conducted in Greenland. In a joint statement, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Great Britain emphasized, “As NATO members, we are committed to strengthening Arctic security as a common transatlantic interest. The ‘Arctic Endurance’ exercises, previously coordinated with allies, respond to this need. They do not pose a threat to anyone.” The countries also highlighted their openness to dialogue with respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the island.
