European Parliament Suspends US Trade Agreement Ratification Amid Trump Threats

European Parliament suspends ratification of EU-US trade agreement after three major groups withdraw support due to Trump’s threats.

EPP Reverses Position

European People’s Party, the largest group in the European Parliament, had previously supported continuing the ratification process. However, they changed their position following Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland. German MEP Manfred Weber announced suspension of American product tariffs at 0 percent while supporting the agreement in principle.

Other Groups Follow Suit

Socialists and Democrats (S&D) and Renew Europe groups also joined in calling for suspension of the ratification process. Without the support of these three major groups, the agreement cannot achieve majority approval in the European Parliament.

Political Response

S&D leader Iratxe Garcia Perez emphasized that “the EU will not be intimidated” and called for immediate suspension of negotiations. Political groups are scheduled to meet in Strasbourg on Wednesday to discuss the matter further.
