Five-Hour Standoff at Chopin Airport Leads to Detention of Ukrainian Man with Signal Jammer

A 27-year-old Ukrainian man was detained at Warsaw’s Chopin Airport on December 26, 2025, on suspicion of attempting to disrupt aviation radio frequencies.

Incident and Arrest

An incident occurred at Warsaw’s Chopin Airport leading to the detention and temporary arrest of a 27-year-old Ukrainian citizen on suspicion of attempting to disrupt radio waves with equipment operating in bands reserved for aviation communication and navigation.

Suspect’s Background and Presence

Media reports described the man regularly appearing at Chopin Airport’s cafes since mid-December, spending hours with an open laptop, claiming he missed his flight. Airport security initially had no grounds to intervene. He had arrived in Poland on December 9 and began frequenting the airport shortly after.

Turning Point in Investigation

The turning point came on the night of December 25-26. A SOL patrol that had previously monitored the man recognized him and began asking more detailed questions. His answers were reportedly inconsistent, and he refused to show identification or proof of a flight.

Unusual Possessions and the Jammer

Police noted unusual luggage contents: about five kilograms of oats, onions, a small electric kettle, and significant electronics including headphones, microphones, chargers, and network cable coils. A metal device with multiple antennas resembling a jammer raised suspicion. While possessing such a device is not illegal, its presence, combined with other factors, seemed peculiar to authorities.

Legal Proceedings and Status

The case was reported to ABW’s anti-terrorist center, with SKW indicating ABW’s jurisdiction. A formal detention decision took about five hours, leading to the case being transferred to the Warsaw Metropolitan Police’s Criminal Terror and Homicide Division. The suspect, Illia S., was formally arrested on December 27 and faces up to five years in prison.
