A tragic accident on January 19, 2025, at a busy Warsaw intersection killed a six-year-old boy and injured four others, prompting residents to call for safety improvements.
Fatal Accident at Szembeka Square
On January 19, 2025, at Szembeka Square in Warsaw, a tragic accident occurred, sparking discussion about safety at one of the busiest intersections on Praga-Południe.
As a result of the accident, a six-year-old boy hit by a car died. Four people were injured. One of the cars forced priority, turning left from Grochowska Street into Zamieniecka Street and hitting another car that was traveling on Grochowska Street, which then overturned, driving into a group of people on the pedestrian crossing.
Residents Warn of Dangerous Intersection
According to residents of Gocław, dangerous situations often occur at the Grochowska and Zamieniecka intersection.
“When we are traveling on Grochowska Street and want to turn into Zamieniecka Street, we have to drive beyond the traffic light, stop in the middle of the intersection and let people coming from the opposite direction pass,” said Anna, a resident of Gocław. “It is very difficult in this place to determine at what speed these cars are traveling and when they stop. The intersection needs improvement urgently.”
Adrian, who has lived near Szembeka Square since birth, believes that “narrowing the street or speed cameras won’t help, only changing the traffic light synchronization.”
Witness Accounts and Safety Concerns
Karolina emphasizes that “the intersection has always been somewhat dangerous. Sidewalks are narrow, with a large number of people passing through daily. The news of this accident and the death is chilling.”
According to Jacek Maniecki, owner of the ‘Gocław Driving School’, “The intersection of Grochowska and Zamieniecka is very dangerous. Many people do not comply with the speed limit of 50 km/h.”
Accident Footage Released
Miejski Reporter portal obtained footage of the accident showing a Ford trying to turn left and a speeding Toyota hitting it.
Call for Traffic Organization Changes
Jacek Maniecki, who has been a resident of Praga Południe for three decades, noted that “The intersection itself was designed a long time ago, according to now outdated traffic organization rules. It desperately needs reorganization because there are many collisions at this location.”
Opinions of Praga residents, local drivers, and driving instructors are consistent – the intersection requires urgent changes. The key is to introduce collision-free left turns and new traffic light synchronization adapted to today’s traffic intensity.
