Rafał Modrzewski points out that dual-use technologies, with both civilian and military applications, play a key role in building modern defense capabilities. He explains that developing production infrastructure solely for potential military conflict would not only be costly but also difficult to maintain in the long term.
“Building large production capabilities just in case they might be useful in case of military conflict would be very expensive and complicated,” emphasizes the founder of Iceye.
Drones and AI: Dual Benefits for Security and Business
According to Rafał Modrzewski, drones and artificial intelligence solutions also belong to the category of dual-use technologies. Investing in them brings a double benefit: strengthening national security while allowing companies to develop and compete internationally.
“By investing in such technologies, we not only ensure our military security, but we also give our companies the means to develop these technologies and compete with their partners on the international stage,” he emphasizes.
Overcoming Early Doubts in European Technology Development
The founder of Iceye recalls the company’s beginnings and the prevailing beliefs in Poland regarding advanced technology development. Just a few years ago, there was a conviction that creating solutions competitive with US or Japanese companies was beyond the reach of Polish and European enterprises.
“In Poland, there was a belief that building technology at such a level could not succeed,” Modrzewski recalls, pointing to financial limitations and doubts about competencies.
Iceye’s Success Story: A European Satellite Technology Leader
Today, Modrzewski notes, these concerns have proven unfounded. Iceye has not only proven that globally competitive technologies can be created in Europe, but has become one of the leaders in the satellite segment.
“We have proven that in Poland and Europe something like this can be done – today Iceye is a world leader in satellite technology,” emphasizes the founder, adding that a particular source of pride is that this success was built right in Europe.
