US President Trump calls for immediate negotiations to acquire Greenland during World Economic Forum speech in Davos.
Trump Addresses Greenland Situation in Davos
On Wednesday, January 21, Donald Trump delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The US president addressed the situation in Greenland, stating that no country or group of countries, besides the USA, is able to protect Greenland. He emphasized that the US is a great power greater than people can comprehend, referencing the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro as an example.
Trump suggested that establishing US military bases in Greenland would be a favor to Denmark and assured that he does not want to use force to gain the island.
US Calls for “Immediate Negotiations”
The president stated that only the US can defend Greenland’s large territory of ice. He called for immediate negotiations to re-discuss the US acquisition of Greenland, arguing that developing and improving the island would make it beneficial and secure for Europe and the US.
Trump also claimed that historical precedent shows similar territorial acquisitions and “there is nothing wrong with it.”
“You Wouldn’t Have NATO Without Me”
According to Trump, a US takeover of Greenland “will not be a threat to NATO” but will even strengthen its security. However, he accused NATO of treating the US unfairly, stating “we gave so much and received so little in return.”
The president claimed to have done more to help NATO than any other president, stating “you wouldn’t have NATO if I hadn’t gotten involved during my first term.” He added that NATO “has a choice” regarding Greenland, saying “say ‘yes’ and we will be very grateful or ‘no’ and we will remember it.”
