Denmark Reacts to Trump’s Remarks: “The Problem Has Not Disappeared”

Danish Foreign Minister responds to Trump’s Davos speech, noting his promises don’t resolve tensions over Greenland.

Danish Foreign Minister: Trump’s Ambitions Unchanged

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Rasmussen stated that Donald Trump’s declaration that military force will not be used against Greenland does not resolve the dispute surrounding the island. While positively assessing the American leader’s remarks, Rasmussen emphasized that the problem remains.

There is a statement that military force will not be used, but that doesn’t make the problem disappear, the Danish Foreign Minister said. The challenge still exists.

Trump’s Davos Speech on Greenland

During his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump assured that his country would not attack Greenland but did not withdraw from his intention to take control of it. The Danish head of diplomacy told DR that he had familiarized himself with the content of the US president’s speech.

The intentions of the US president remain unchanged, said Rasmussen. He added that the promise itself to refrain from using force does not resolve tensions between Washington and Copenhagen.

“I Only Ask for Greenland”

Donald Trump stated during his Davos speech that “the United States wants Greenland, which they already had as a trustee.” He added: “I only ask for Greenland, including the title of ownership, which is needed to defend that place.”

If there is a war, many actions will be carried out on this land. Missiles will fly over this ice, Trump emphasized. He added that the US needs the island to deter enemies and build a golden dome there.

“I ask for a piece of ice, placed in a location that can play a key role in world peace and world protection. This is little compared to what we have given over decades,” Trump argued. “We extremely respect the residents of Greenland and Denmark, but all NATO allies are obliged to maintain the ability to defend their territory, and no country other than the US is able to secure Greenland.”

The most important representatives of Danish authorities do not participate in the World Economic Forum in Davos.
