NATO scrambled fighter jets over the Baltic on January 22 in response to Russian military aircraft approaching Polish airspace.
NATO Aircraft Deployed Over Poland
On Thursday, January 22, residents and media in Trójmiasto reported hearing loud noises and seeing fighter jets. Two NATO aircraft from the 22nd Tactical Air Base in Malbroke, which broke the sound barrier, were involved according to trojmiasto.pl.
The aircraft were scrambled due to a Russian Federation aircraft approaching Polish airspace. Major Ewa Złotnicka from the Operational Command of the Armed Forces stated that while this happens occasionally, there was no violation of Polish airspace.
She mentioned these were operational flights and couldn’t provide details for security reasons, adding they were related to Russian military aircraft activity in the Baltic region.
Dutch Navy Escorts Russian Ships
On Wednesday, January 21, the Dutch navy escorted suspicious Russian ships in the North Sea for the second time recently, Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans reported.
Brekelmans noted that Russian vessels could be used for intelligence activities, including spying on and monitoring critical maritime infrastructure. He assured they remain vigilant and ready to respond but didn’t disclose details about the escorted ships.
Recent Russian Naval Activities
In December, the British fleet escorted a Russian submarine in the English Channel, and a month earlier monitored the Russian ship “Jantar,” which was collecting intelligence and observing underwater cables.
At the end of the year, Great Britain and Norway signed an agreement on protecting underwater infrastructure, involving joint naval actions in the North Atlantic.
