Polish children spend an average of nearly five hours daily in front of screens, though this represents a decrease of about half an hour compared to previous research. The scale of the phenomenon remains substantial, with some children spending up to eight or even twelve hours online daily.

Parental Awareness vs. Reality

Parents typically estimate their children’s screen time at around four hours daily, which remains significant. However, the primary issue isn’t underestimation but rather a lack of awareness about what children specifically do online.

Younger Children Getting Smartphones

Children are receiving smartphones at increasingly younger ages, with the average age now being 8-9 years old. Most children have their own phones with internet access before their tenth birthday, creating unrestricted windows to the world beyond simple communication with parents.

Girls tend to use social media more for maintaining relationships, writing, commenting, and reacting. Boys more frequently play online games, which are also relational activities. Technical protections are important, especially for younger children, but relationships become crucial for older ones. Conversation, interest, and asking “What are you watching?” or “What engages you?” are vital. Not judging or trivializing what might seem like “internet nonsense” to adults but represents a child’s entire world is essential. Internet is not exclusively harmful; for many children, it’s a place for building relationships, developing passions, learning languages, and connecting with peers worldwide.
