Finnish Soldiers Suffer Frostbite During Elite Training

Finnish army reports 37 soldiers, including five with second-degree frostbite, injured during January exercises in the elite Jaeger Brigade.

Training Continues Despite Injuries

Exercises were not halted, though outdoor activities were restricted after the incident. An investigation into safety and service protocols has been launched to prevent recurrence.

Finland’s Defense Forces stated exercises followed precautionary directives and Jaeger Brigade training instructions. The Brigade is reviewing its cold-weather protocols and discussing improvements with instructors.

Elite Jaeger Brigade and Harsh Conditions

The Jaeger Brigade is an elite unit training soldiers for Finland’s extreme northern conditions, with 2,200 conscripts and volunteers annually. Training includes mortar, anti-tank weapons, and reconnaissance skills.

Training emphasizes proper clothing and cold monitoring. Personnel are required to check for concerning symptoms, and daily inspections are conducted to identify cold-related injuries for immediate medical attention.
